Marriage with a Turkish citizen does not automatically acquire Turkish citizenship. However, foreigners who want to acquire Turkish citizenship due to marriage with a Turkish citizen must proof that they have been married for at least three years, have been living together effectively and the marriage continues. If these requirements are met they can apply in writing to the civil administrations in the country and to the Turkish consulates abroad. As a result of the examination and investigation to be carried out by the Ministry of Interior upon the application, persons who are found to meet the required conditions acquire Turkish citizenship as of the date of the decision regarding the determination of this situation.

However, if a foreigner who marries a Turkish citizen loses his former citizenship by getting married, he or she automatically acquires Turkish citizenship. Those who acquire Turkish citizenship through marriage, if they are in good faith in the contract, retain their Turkish citizenship if it is decided to nullify the marriage. Children who are divorced from marriage retain their Turkish citizenship even if their parents are not in good faith.
