The European Commission has adopted a Communication on a competition policy fit for new challenges (COM(2021) 713 final), in which it outlines the contributions of its competition policy to the green and digital transitions, as well as to a resilient Single Market.

This comes as the Commission is pursuing a review of competition policy tools to make sure all competition instruments ‘remain fit for purpose’, and complement its existing toolbox. In this sense, the Communication notes that new regulatory tools, such as the envisioned Digital Markets Act and the Foreign Subsidies Regulation will complement the review and address gaps in the Commission’s overall toolbox.

The Communication also takes into consideration the State aid Temporary Framework and the Antitrust Temporary Framework, adopted by the Commission in March and April 2020 response to the COVID-19 crisis.
